Large‐Scale Flow Management Action Drives Estuarine Ecological Response

چکیده
Resource managers rely on large-scale flow and habitat enhancement actions to support sensitive species in the San Francisco Bay–Delta. The effects of these target ecosystems are largely unknown. In 2018, we implemented an ecosystem-scale experiment reduce salinity improve access high-quality Suisun Marsh, California, for Endangered Species Act-listed Delta Smelt Hypomesus transpacificus. action included a release approximately 46 million m3 additional conjunction with operation novel water management facility, Marsh Salinity Control Gates. This experimental resulted more low-salinity than would have been present as compared similar historical low-flow summer conditions. We evaluated effect decreasing assemblage using combination ordination analyses circular statistics. focused this analysis long-term monitoring data collected within during July August found that aquatic community changed significantly small sloughs but not large-slough response action. shift from 2018 differed trends both slough sizes, albeit habitat. Specifically, observed (1) California bay shrimp Crangon franciscorum Striped Bass Morone saxatilis abundance like occurring low-salinity, wet year types; (2) uncharacteristic seasonal decline Black Sea jellyfish Maeotias marginata. posit changes were driven by behavioral responses lower-salinity conditions physical displacement directional resulting

Confounding Effect of Flow on Estuarine Response to Nitrogen Loading
The total maximum daily load ~TMDL! concept provides the basis for regulating pollution load from riverine sources to impaired water bodies. However, load is comprised of two components: flow and concentration. These two components may have confounding, or even conflicting, effects on waterbody attributes of concern. This is particularly the case for dynamic, advective systems, such as estuarie...
متن کاملEstuarine classification and response to nitrogen loading: Insights from simple ecological models
Estuaries exhibit a large range in their responses to nitrogen loadings determined in part by characteristics of the driver, such as magnitude and frequency, but also by such intrinsic characteristics as physical/chemical factors (e.g., depth, volume, hypsometry, salinity, turbidity) and biological factors (e.g., nature of ecological communities, trophic interactions). To address the richness o...
متن کاملEcological restoration and estuarine management: placing people in the coastal landscape
1. Amid signs that estuarine ecosystems are increasingly degraded and may reach new thresholds of irreversible decline, restoration ecologists and coastal managers world-wide have joined the debate on how best to reverse the trends of the recent past. 2. Any meaningful effort at reversal must, however, recognize that humans are an integral part of the landscape, particularly in urban estuarine ...
متن کاملCompetition Drives Clumpy Species Coexistence in Estuarine Phytoplankton
Understanding the mechanisms that maintain biodiversity is a fundamental problem in ecology. Competition is thought to reduce diversity, but hundreds of microbial aquatic primary producers species coexist and compete for a few essential resources (e.g., nutrients and light). Here, we show that resource competition is a plausible mechanism for explaining clumpy distribution on individual species...
متن کاملPERSPECTIVES IN ESTUARINE AND COASTAL SCIENCE Linking Restoration Ecology and Ecological Restoration in Estuarine Landscapes
More than ever, there is a need to integrate restoration ecology, as practiced by the scientific community, and ecological restoration, a province that is largely, but not entirely the purview of practitioners. Success in some coastal restoration projects is increasingly measured in the context of practioner skills and cultural goals rather than by the manifestation of underlying ecological pri...
